is it brass ????????

I wanted to ask everybody how do you test something to see if it's brass? I like to sort my stuff before taking it to the yard and know what I have too. Thanks

Me too! but i have no way to test.

If I am in doubt I take a file to it. I just bought a real nice copper dish but when I got home I pulled out the old file, it was brass.

yellow = brass
red = copper

is the test I go by, so far seems to work

The real fun part is how to determine if it is bronze or brass.

around here it doesnt matter, same price whether its brass or bronze, most places give the same price for yellow and red brass to

You should be getting more per pound for your red brass, although not by much. It can sometimes be tricky to tell apart from copper though, and might make it a bit of a risk for new buyers.

non magnetic helps narrow down... then file or grind a spot... white means aluminum.. if it sparks.. stainless steel... yellow means brass... good easy money in buying brass for recycle if you find right yard sales LOL
