I've heard this question asked a lot. here's my 2 cents worth. I've helped to organize 4 hunts. if you're interested in seeing and reading about them, check out, Chisolm Trail Hunt, on this site.
let me tell you something, for me its not about what you find, monetarily, its about the people you meet and become friends with.
that's something you can't buy.
I now have friends from Alaska to California, from Texas to Minnesota, from Maine to Florida and a whole lot of places in between. I've even got a couple from across the pond, these are people I call friends. If it wasn't for a club hunt, I probably wouldn't have met any of them.
So when you ask is it worth it? my Opinion? it depends on what you're looking to get out of it. if you're just looking at it as some way to find valuable things, maybe it's not for you. if you're looking for people to expand your love of this hobby with, without expectations, maybe it is.
most people don't metal detect to get rich or as a job, they metal detect because the history bug has bitten them. when you dig something up, and say, "How in the hell did that get here?" you know it's not about money.
as for the organizers making money? I'm sure some do. I can tell you that we didn't make even a dime. we paid extra out our pockets to make it fun for everyone.
now you're probably asking why we did it for 5 hunts. it's all about the friends. you can never have to many.
In the end you have to ask yourself, how much are new friends worth? then make your decision.
If you haven't tried a hunt. try it. you'll never now what will happen if you don't.
I'm going to step down from the soapbox now. I hope this helps some of you
