Con, your focus is in the wrong place. You need to do your research and find the skirmishes that took place out and away from the parks. The ones that now as they did then reside on private property. Most battlefields are protected and are just where the main part of the action was. The skirmishes were just as heated, but the National Park Service couldn't fence off three entire counties where the body of the fighting took place, so they only ended up with the heart.

Go to your local county courthouse and ask for the Government Survey Plats from the 1800's. Most date from 1850 to 1880. Sometimes they have copies available for sale. You can spread these out and use a magnifying glass to search for old pioneer homesteads, villages, taverns, crossroads, stagecoach way stations, fort sites, water crossing, railroad depots and other sites. If you find such a cache of maps, I'd like to hear about it.
Good luck and I hope you find a great site. ;)
