Is this a carriage step?

Hello! I am hoping someone can help me. This brass object is about 4" long, and I'm thinking it's a carriage step? There are threads at the end of the square shaft. If anyone can positively identify this, it would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance! Tonya

Do you have something to insert into the photo to gauge size? If that has a typical 1/2" shaft, it seems a bit too small for a step.

Have you inspected it carefully for makers marks? -it seems too well made not to be marked in my humble opinion.

I am not absolute, but your item looks like a raised insert step that goes to an old barber chair.

Thanks old digger! It does look very similiar. Perhaps it is a version of a barber chair step! The shaft is 1/2" where it is cast into the main assembly. (half inch). The dimensions are 4" X 4". The entire item was covered in oxidation before it was cleaned. I have not had a chance to submit another picture with an object for size reference, but will try this weekend.

I've never seen a brass buggy or carriage step. But then I've never seen all the carriage steps either. It certainly looks like it's intended for a step, and I'm more inclined to also think in the line of barber shop chair.

I agree, but still, it appears to have a flat foot tread. I thought perhaps coffin handle, but that wouldn't have the flat tread, it would be a rounded handle. The square shaft means it's not supposed to turn in the hole, so it probably doesn't fit through wood, but into another metal part, like the barber chair step.

Those are all great ideas, and very possible! I don't see any manufacturer's stamp on it...it's just so odd! I wouldn't have thought of a drawer pull.....I won't "step on that one!" Thanks everyone for all of the great suggestions! I'd have to say it's a step for sure.......thanks everyone!

It doesn't seem beefy enough to me for it to have been made to step on or hold weight. A drawer pull seems plausible, but I'm thinking its a stylized bottle opener from a vending machine.
