Hello All,

This item was recovered in a field where other artillery related items were found, but also 19th century work related items. The piece is broken at the top, where it is more thick, then tapers down to the bottom. It is definitely made of copper. The damage was caused by high heat most certainly, as shown by the fracturing of the metal. I don’t believe a plow would do that. The diameter of the center hole is difficult to measure because of the bending and twisting of the metal, but it appears to be around 2.3 or 2.4inches. The diameter at the base is of course larger. Would love to know your thoughts!

I am certainly not an artillery expert by any means, but if you go to the following website and scroll halfway down the pages, you can see some pretty good examples of copper sabots. Cayenne Civil War Relics

Hopefully TheCannonballGuy will chime in.

Buckleboy, please pardon my delay in responding. Although that copper object looks a lot like some kind of artillery shell's sabot, it definitely isn't. I don't know what it is, but I'm 100% sure it is not part of an artillery projectile.

Thanks all for your help. It’s going in the recycling bin. :)
