attached is a pic of this heavy brass item,
has a floral or vine-like border around edges, with
"DEFIANCE" engraved across top, and
"SELFINKER" across the bottom.

Is it a nameplate from a "Self-Inking" Printer model??

What is it?

Yes, Defiance Manufacturing Co. Chicago was advertizing these "printing outfits" in the 1870's along with a zillion other companies. You'll find a reference in "Leslies" if you google it. They were pretty cheapo things, and not what you'd ever think of as a real printing press.
