I bought this today. I have a good idea on the arrowheads if they are real, stone artifacts are another story. It's 4 inches long never really seen ax head so black just hope I did good for 50.00. I know it's hard to judge if it's real by pictures, but any opinions would be welcome thanks.

The 5 million dollar question. It looks good to me. However, I'm looking at pics. And have no general knowledge of reproducing artifacts. I can't see what would make one call fake, going on these pics.

Thanks for confirmation of what I thought. Do you think it was in a fire because of the blackness or is that natural?

Were you told where it was found?
That will be a good starting point to first check if it matches the local material.
It looks like some type of granite or shist type material.

If the blackness rubs off, I'd throw it at who ever sold it. That is supposed to be the natural color and should not rub off, unless a little creek patina is still fresh on it.

Give it a bath and see if any color comes off. I know some of the good fakers will bake that stuff on through what I have read. That way it doesnt come off unless it chips but dont chip it just in case its real. That is a great price on a grooved ax if its real. Hard to tell without holding it.

Yep, it's real and you did very well for $50. It's worth at least 3 times that. Would have been more without the little bit chip. Otherwise it's a dang nice axe. I'm assuming it's probably an Iowa or Missouri axe?

I agree Hippy. Nice axe especially now that the authenticity is pretty sure. When he mentioned fire, and black, all I could think of was soot. That wouldn't be normal. It is a nice axe. Axe heads are my favorite find!!

The guy I bought it from said it was a field find in Illinois. He named his price,I'm not strong on giving values but I knew it was worth that.Workmanship is great. Thanks for all the great advise.

Save it. Back when the market was great probably 5 yrs ago it would of been worth $300 to $500. Its very nice looking
