So I was invited out with my detector to a farm that belongs to some family friends this weekend and I had an excellent time. I plan to post my MD finds later when I get more time but I just couldn't wait to get some opinions on this one..

While detecting a large unplanted field area something with a very familiar shape caught my eye, I glanced over and sure enough it was an arrowhead and the first one I've found since I was a kid, I was very pleased. When I showed it to the landowners they acted like it was as common as finding a modern penny in a parking lot.. They then proceeded to show me 3 display cases full of arrowheads, spear points, pottery shards and various other artifacts, many of which were in excellent condition and I'd never seen the likes of..all recovered on the property over the years. At this point I was absolutely intrigued and they directed me to a large creek bed that ran along the edge of the property where they said many of the artifacts were found, I headed in that direction with haste.

I searched the creek for a couple hours until I came upon a large clay shelf where the bank was collapsed and I saw a strange shape sticking out of the thick grey clay..if it wasnt for the strangely perfect hole bored in the end of the object I would have passed it up without a second glance. I reached down and pulled it out of the ground and when I wiped some of the dirt away I could see what appeared to be a face carved in the front and an indentation in the top which was packed full but I figured it was a second hole..I was ecstatic at the thought of what this could be. I showed it to the landowners and they congratulated me on my find and said they thought it might be an "effigy pipe" and possibly crafted by the Shawnee? who were widespread through the area.

I took it home and gingerly cleaned its orifices with warm water a bit of dish soap and some toothpicks/qtips..this is the result.

After I cleaned it I couldn't help but feel as if I just made a mistake, even though I was very careful. Was this a bad idea?

I would also love to hear any opinions on the objects age /origin or otherwise that you knowledgeable folks out there can offer.

Thanks for reading and HH,

Chris

I still say it is a Turtle Head Pipe! A turtle's nostrils are at the front of their' snout or nose and most North American snakes have their' nostrils on the side of their' nose or snout in front of and slightly below their' eyes.

Very very cool piece.

I voted banner, my gut tells me snake, plus Ohio has the famous serpent mound to match your find!

that is one of the coolest things I have seen on this site, congratulations and go back to that site!!

I'm voting banner. That looks like a $4 figure Native American artifact to me. That, and it's stinkin' cool!!

This thread should be on banner already.... :icon_scratch: A thread like this should not need banner votes. :dontknow: Its clear that if its genuine it needs to be on banner. :headbang:
I don't want this thread buried and I will do everything in my power to help it make banner and stay on the top. :icon_thumright:

Keep @ it and HH !!

You are the man MUD and I appreciate all of your efforts:icon_thumright: Though since posting it over at the North American Artifacts forum some questions have been raised over it's authenticity..so I doubt this one will ever see the banner:sadsmiley:

However, I'm in the process of getting that sorted out and at the end of the day getting it up on the banner doesn't really matter to me. I just feel so fortunate that I was able to find and possess something so amazing..heck I'd be honored to even hold it for a few moments!

You guys are great and your votes and comments have made this experience that much better. They also make Tnet what it is, a wonderful community.

I'll be returning to the place where I found the Turtle/Snake (i'm torn now myself:laughing7:) head tomorrow and am excited for what I may find next,

Thank you all again and HH

Chris

The Patina on the item is where the negative area came from. Its like getting a antique made from a precious metal and polishing it with a cleaner to make it look new. After that all of the age is taken away. IMO it might be a pipe but the age doesnt show in the stone and that is the reason. If you ever find something nice do not clean it with harsh cleaners or something that will scratch it. Most items are worth more dirty. I just wanted to explain it a bit. HH, rock

WOW! Really cool pipe and wonderful arrowhead - CONGRATS! :wav: Andi

How many votes to get banner? We should be there by now.

I knew shortly after I'd cleaned it that I should've been more patient and consulted those far more knowledgeable than myself..even though I thought I took a ton of care in the process. I used a small dab of Dawn dish soap diluted in about 6oz of water, q-tips and a couple plastic dental pics to scrape out the clay and I used a very light touch with those. I reassured myself "hey it's tooled from stone..how could I possibly damage it's value with the amount of care I have taken?" At the same time I couldn't help but feel as if I had just committed a crime..

This has been a lesson learned for sure and the worst part is I knew better from the start.

I still know what I have and I never plan to sell it anyhow so I guess I shouldn't be too ashamed in the end.

HH,
Chris

I think this one has gone beyond the vote at this point Kid but thank you for your support anyhow:icon_thumright:

HH,

It is what it is. Banner in my book. FWIW.

That's a very special find.

At the end of the day you rescued a piece of history from being lost to time. If it survived this long in the dirt, cover in back up in a bucket of the exact same dirt/clay for a month & then just rinse with clean cool water.
