Is this woven basket?

this was a larger piece when I found it.. it came from a waterlogged site. A peat bog. most of the disinagrated in my hand. I was able to keep this peice wet until I got it in a mixture of white glue and water.

It kind of looks like it, but most of the really thin mats found at wet sites like Key Marco ended up being palm thatch. Actual man made matting is thicker and usually the individual fibers are made.

Here is a piece of thatch from a palm in my yard. Smaller palms have even finer thatch, this is a chuck that has been in the rain and wind for a while.

I spent some time with a magnifying glass.. and was pleasantly surprised.. every individual fiber is spun multiple fibers. also found out my new phone zooms in pretty well. here's a new photo

Agreed. Very cool finds! Keep hitting that bog. I can't imagine that's an easy thing to search through.
