the only readable thing one it and it the '''''''rex ''' letters on it ..........the r e x really is readable ...the pic on the pc is not that great if someone can get the letters better than please help ....also known as a nj copper ....pine

example on the bottom is one in good shape

The coins he acquired were know as “St. Patrick coppers” and were originally struck in 1641 and 1642, and were used to pay the Catholic troops who fought Cromwell’s Protestant army in the Ulster Rebellion. A Puritanical movement in England suppressed everything Catholic, including these copper pieces. The coins reappeared in Ireland and the Isle of Man, but in 1679 the Manx Parliament rescinded their use as legal tender. These coppers were struck in two denominations a halfpence (1/2 penny) and a farthing (1/4 penny).

In September of 1681, Newby left Ireland, with about 20 other Quakers, heading for the American Colonies. He sailed on a fishing ship called “Owners Adventurer.” About a month later, the ship anchored off what is now Salem, New Jersey. After spending the winter in Salem, Newby moved to Gloucester County near present day Camden. It was there he set up the first bank in the Province of New Jersey

?

well i thoiught it was a great find 1641 to 1681 . and found in nj...............ohwell.........didnt even have to really dig it it was almost a surface find ...........

If it is a St. Pat you should be able to see the brass splasher, any sign of it?

Cool Find!

That's one thing I love about this hobby. Look at the things you've learned, and knew absolutely nothing about a day or two ago.

If you can take a better shot of it and don't resize it so small. I'll see if I can pull some detail out for you.
Mike

i hope thats what it is for you! thats got to be extremely rare!?

Have seen quite a few Irish coppers, but never this one.
Great find.. Congratulations!

I cannot make out that it is a St Pat's copper, the photo/scan way too small. Can you point out a detail why you think it is, other than REX which is on a lot of coppers?

Don

Can you get a better picture? The outline does look like it has a chance.

If you can confirm I think that is a banner find for sure! Will never make it because of the condition but is a great rarity to find.

Exact size and weight would help as well. As Don said Rex alone won't cut it, if it actually is a St. Pat it would be quite a find. More information please!

It would be rather important for the research currently going on by a couple of well known collectors studying among other coins the distribution of the St Patrick coppers. Although the coin is not exactly rare, it is very rare to see one found and if anyone finds one please yell out so the information can be passed on to those doing the research.

I know of only one being found that I can remember and that was found in nearby Burlington County years ago and was a Farthing and was properly ID'd by an expert.

I really hope Al you can get a clearer, bigger, higher resolution photo posted or at least emailed to me and I would forward it to the ones doing the study for proper attribution.

Also, as stated above , what is the size of the coin??? In mm if you can, important to know for sure if looking at a Farthing or a possible Halfpenny. If Halfpenny size that would be of very special interest.

Don

ok i got the coin on a scale and its weight is 114 gn------- or 7.4g ------ 4.8 dwt --------26mm....

and don i can send you the coin ...i know you know this stuff better than me ...i have not clean it ....the more i look at it the more i think i can see letters ..but its pretty worn ....i'm afraid to clean it .......don please call me at 732 278 1701 .......alfonso

i'm afraid i cant get a better scan of the coin . but i'm willing to send it to don .for a evalue of it ....we are both in nj ......

Al, that weight seems too heavy for a worn out Farthing, but let me check if possible, otherwise I would have to go with the coin being a counterfeit KG copper. I will get back to you later today, off for an appointment right now.

Don

to left of the r in 'rex' i can make a crown with a faint face under it . i also see a star to the left of the face and my wife says she see the larger crown to the left of the star ..hope this helps
