It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

Well the story goes like this..... I wanted to get to a girl scout camp last season & just plain ran out of decent weather before hanging up the detector for the year. Waited through the long Wi. winter, finally some warm weather moved in & melted the seasons snow fall. Now with this camp on county land in Wi. I knew I could go there without having to ask permission. I got there on March 29th. (that's early here in the northwoods) I had a fantastic day, I found 10 silver coins, My first buffalo nickle & got to watch a pair of sand hill cranes walking around the field paying no never mind to me! Well it happened to turn cold again & we got a few inches of snow, so I had to wait a couple more weeks before going back.

The day came when I could go back & on my way down the road to the place I met the care taker...... He asked me what I was doing back there & I said I was on my way to metal detect, he told how long the place was there ( about 70 years) And said good luck..... A few minutes later he came back down the road & asked me if those were all of my holes in the ball field??? I looked at him not really knowing how to answer him cuz I knew I was there a couple weeks before & I know I fill all my holes. I came clean & said that yes I did metal detect that field but I always fill my holes in. He said well just make sure you do, I gotta mow that field & I don't like the bumps.

Wow...... Didn't know what to think, I made it back to the field & saw that there were hundreds of holes all over the place, heck... they were my holes!!!! But I swear I fill all of them back in???? I'm standing there in astonishment, what in the world I said to myself? So I proceeded to go around and fill all those holes in again, took me darn near an hour. (ok, quit laughing at me) Now that the holes are all filled back in, I went ahead & started metal detecting, after a hour or two of detecting I look behind me & there's my feathered friends the Sand hill cranes again, funny birds that they are, I noticed something, those gosh darn things were following me around pulling my plugs out, mystery solved!!! they had to be looking for grubs or something. Ya think they could have done the hard work for themselves.

Moral to the story; Don't let sand hill cranes make a liar out of you!

Here's that days finds.

I know it's a serious situation but I had to laugh. Dang birds!!!... If you scared them off they would just come back after you left. Wow, I feel for you. Very nice silver coins you found there. It's hard to find a place that productive any more. Hopefully those birds will move on to another place. Congrats on the great finds!

It's a 36. This place is on a gated road & it's a mile & a half walk into it, so yeah..... It's an untapped place for sure!

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

Seger,
Congrats on some awesome coins. Nice looking Buff.
I had the same problem you did on the two farm spots I hunt. I fill in my holes, but when I come back some are dug out again. I know it's not cranes, so maybe deer or squirrels?
You mentioned the Wisconsin Northwoods. We used to go to a fishing lodge in Boulder Junction on Little Crooked Lake. You anywhere near there?

Absolutely, I'm over in Conover & am at the flea market every Tues. during the summer at Boulder Jct. Even done alot of metal detecting down off of K & co. H. alot of old lumber camps around the area.

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

I've had the same problem, but with the squirrels.
I hunted a school yard and was very careful to fill all the holes,
two weeks later I went back and all my holes were open.
After a quick clean up I watched a squirrel dig several back up to
bury a nut. He was too lazy to dig his own holes.

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

Happens to me all the time, in my case it's the o'possums.

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

Oh man! That's too funny!

One time I was downtown detecting and a guy stopped to watch me and we started talking . . . . . the guy had his dog with him . . . . . I started digging up some targets to show him what treasures there are in the ground . . . . . the dog watched me dig and he started digging in random spots in the grass ~ copying me! That dog could dig a serious 8 inch hole in no time flat! It was funny ~ but he sure did some damage to the grass!

Had the same problem.Lady called and said i didnt fill in my holes when i knew i did.
Went back and refilled them and while we were talking we watched one come down and take a plug out.
I think what they do is they watch other squirrels bury nuts and go take them.So when they see you digging that is what they think.......

Great story and one to get a good laugh out of........Great finds and good luck with the birds!!!

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

Sounds like you have a great spot there and that's funny about the birds. The squirrels tear up my holes to.One time i dug a small hole and nickels were coming out and cut a slot in the sod to get at the whole role.I was at the park and kids were right there watching.I covered the hole and left.A few days later i went back because there was a club hunt and a friend came along. When we get to the sight there was a big sign saying this is not the way to dig.I looked at jon and laughed.Thats my hole. The kids dug it up when i left.
