It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

Well the story goes like this..... I wanted to get to a girl scout camp last season & just plain ran out of decent weather before hanging up the detector for the year. Waited through the long Wi. winter, finally some warm weather moved in & melted the seasons snow fall. Now with this camp on county land in Wi. I knew I could go there without having to ask permission. I got there on March 29th. (that's early here in the northwoods) I had a fantastic day, I found 10 silver coins, My first buffalo nickle & got to watch a pair of sand hill cranes walking around the field paying no never mind to me! Well it happened to turn cold again & we got a few inches of snow, so I had to wait a couple more weeks before going back.

The day came when I could go back & on my way down the road to the place I met the care taker...... He asked me what I was doing back there & I said I was on my way to metal detect, he told how long the place was there ( about 70 years) And said good luck..... A few minutes later he came back down the road & asked me if those were all of my holes in the ball field??? I looked at him not really knowing how to answer him cuz I knew I was there a couple weeks before & I know I fill all my holes. I came clean & said that yes I did metal detect that field but I always fill my holes in. He said well just make sure you do, I gotta mow that field & I don't like the bumps.

Wow...... Didn't know what to think, I made it back to the field & saw that there were hundreds of holes all over the place, heck... they were my holes!!!! But I swear I fill all of them back in???? I'm standing there in astonishment, what in the world I said to myself? So I proceeded to go around and fill all those holes in again, took me darn near an hour. (ok, quit laughing at me) Now that the holes are all filled back in, I went ahead & started metal detecting, after a hour or two of detecting I look behind me & there's my feathered friends the Sand hill cranes again, funny birds that they are, I noticed something, those gosh darn things were following me around pulling my plugs out, mystery solved!!! they had to be looking for grubs or something. Ya think they could have done the hard work for themselves.

Moral to the story; Don't let sand hill cranes make a liar out of you!

Here's that days finds.

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

For my pesky hole diggers.. it was squirrels rather than birds.. I thought I was following behind one of the worst detectorists ever.. there were holes EVERYWHERE. I was thinking, "What kind of no account jerk goes around digging all these holes and doesn't bother filling them back in?".. then I saw the culprit in action.. or should I say Culprits. There were dozens of them in this particular park, they were ALL digging holes.. looking for nuts or whatever. <rolling eyes> Freakin' Tree Rats! <laughing>

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

Well gosh darn, we have birds, squirrels, oppussums, dogs, raccoons & kids, what's next??? LOL

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

:D Yep! Here too! :-X You can add armadillo's to that long list of varmints! :D

Funny story, Seger! GREAT finds! 8) Good luck on your return!

Nana ;)

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

Great finds. I'm still laughing about those cranes and the holes. You ought to see the damage moles do, and when your dog is digging the tunnels to find the mole. What a mess...looks like a mine field. ;D

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

:D The same thing was happening to me at the silver farm early on. I'd come back the next day and all my plugs were taken out. Not sure which varmint was causing the trouble, but it stopped and hasn't been an issue for a long time ???. Nice silver, by the way!

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

said with a gravelly voice: Damn sand cranes. Don't ya hatem? LOL

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

Kind of hard to blame it on the birds when no one else(the caretaker)sees it. Cool story. I'll have to visit you this year, Montana not old enough for the real cool stuff.

Sasquatch!?!? :o

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

My dog Digsy, formerly known as Dixie likes to go out in the yard where I have my coin garden and dig up the coins. Guess why I changed her name? My other dirty, rotten, thieving, sniveling, no account dog actually dug up my entire coin garden and promptly disappeared! Gosh I miss him.....sigh. I'm pretty sure he is in Margaritaville looking for his lost shaker of salt! ;) Also I have seen the squirrels digging where I replaced a plug. I wonder if there is anything you could carry in a squirt bottle that would repel animals without killing the grass? I know there is a solution you can spray on your flowers to keep the deer away. Might give that a try and see how it works on other critters. M ::) nty

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

Geez, I don't what's funnier.......the story or some of the replies! It's really somethin' that so many people have the same experience but from different culprits.

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

Nice silver recoveries Seger , Glad the caretaker was cool with you !

I'm thinking those boids now sumthing ??? Are you rechecking your holes ?..Might be they're comin in and getting missed silver !

Twice in my Th'ing career I've dug coins in and under cow manure... A Merc. in a cowpatty and a Fugio under a BIG steamy plopper :D

HH !

Oh man GREAT story! :D Any way as for the quote, I have had trouble with the above vermin as well as geese, you have to watch them too, but they eat grass to so might just happen to pop plugs out while trying to eat the grass.

Maybe try a hot pepper and water mixture to spray on ? That works to keep dogs from eating rose bushes or pulling them out everytime you turn around. ( My personal experience with yellow lab pups.) :)

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

I am sorry I had to laugh, but I sympathize withyou a few years ago our local club had a seeded hut after a picnic on a Sun. afternoon, while we were eating noticed a lot a lot of Candian geese in the field, after we ate went to hunt , almost evryone of the silver dimes were gone, we watched it happen and did not even know it!

And I have heard hot peppers ground will keep alot of critters away!

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

I'll second the squirrels, they do it all the time.

Re: It's a WHO DONE IT ???????

Good story and nice job on the multiple silver..ten silvers and a Buffalo..dang that's a banner day!

We have mole problems here..not in my yard but where I hunt in the fields there's tunnels everywhere, then an occasional mound of dirt where they surface.

I've never had a problem with people letting me dig in such places..it's usually a mess when I get there!
