It's always nice having permission come to you!
I was out detecting today with my brother at a site of an old mill that was around from 1840 to the early 1900's and found a few interesting pieces of metal. Suddenly, we saw a man approach who seemed to be in his 70's. We thought he was going to tell us we weren't allowed at the site, but he started telling us about more structures and potential spots around the area. Suddenly, he says "That house across the street is mine, your welcome to detect it if you want." He went on to say he didn't care how my holes looked, ( I made them look perfect anyway) and he said we can check any spot in his lawn. He had a very nice and old looking victorian home. My first good signal was a 1948D rosie, and next was my first old coin spill. A 1919? Buffalo nickel with 2 wheats, a 1929 and a 1937. After this we dug plenty of wheats, 4 from the 40's and 50's, a 1926, and a 1917. Surprisingly, we found no clad at the house with 10 old coins total. I also found 3 decent relics during the hunt, an ancient copper picture frame, a gold plated pocket watch body, and a piece off an old oil lamp. We had a great time digging up coins and relics, but we only had 2 hours to hunt. At the end we showed the guy what we found and asked if he wanted anything. He said we could keep it all and could come back whenever we wanted. He's definitely the nicest guy i've ever met while detecting. Thanks for looking and HH.
