Yes I did. I also used a hammer and chisel and a drilling kit and I totally destroyed it. Harder than 8. Thinking spinel?

I didn't destroy the hammer, of course, but it didn't do anything to the specimen.

I don't know if this helps but this more grey bit on the side has some kind of greasy, waxiness to it. Does that help?

Rock saw. If you do not have one I would bet someone near you that does cabochons and/or members of a rock, gem, and mineral club have one. Google your area for clubs near you. They will be glad to work with you I am sure. Stop beating on it till you talk with them is my advise.

Most the photos are poor quality. Not sure what tools you used that broke, care to elaborate? Quartz, which this looks like, cannot be drilled by standard metal bits. It is about 7 or 8 hardness, you will have to look it up.

Quartz and granite , it's everywhere . I've never seen a rock that a sledge wouldn't crush.
