I sailed on 3 Westpacs but it was during Nam so we spent most of our time in The South China Sea. Crossing the equator was a peacetime activity then. Got 2 grandkids in the Navy now. Grandson is still in electronics school and the granddaughter is stationed in Sicily for 3 years. I'd like for them to experience some sea duty though, just for the experience.

Became a Shellback in 1994 on the USS White Plains, wasn't fun at the time but definitely an experience I'm glad I chose to go through!!

Golden Shellback here..good news was I it was my first west-pac...bad news was I had to survive going through twice.. once for shellback second for Golden...it was 24 hrs before I could walk 30-40 hrs before I could manage going up and down ladders....but well worth it.

WestPac '84/'85. USS Leahy. I believe we went to Mombasa shortly after that also. Interesting place. Dunno what they do for fun in the navy anymore. Everything is too pc. And no more Subic!! That sucks
