It's one BIG NASTY lady...but she's my FIRST in 30 years of hunting.

Yeah I know...it's the nastiest large cent you will probably ever see...but it's all mine! I've been hunting 30 years and this is my first one.
How I found this and the circumstances surrounding it are almost too much to believe...but it's all true.
Met up with my hunting buddy again and we hit a pounded to death park that he's beat to death over the last few years with his explorer...and before that with his red baron. It's the same place I found the merc directly over the big chunk of iron just a few days ago. Heck I didn't expect to find ANYTHING...let alone this amazing beauty...whatcha' think...MS60 or better... ha ha! If you look just to the left of the scratch (it was already on this beauty)...you can see the outline of the chin, mouth, nose, etc.
Anyway honest to God...we were both talking before we hunted of how we both would love to find our first large cent. He told me he bought one at an auction just to run it under his coil so he could see where it hit at. I was telling him of how I had emailed Mike Moutray a few weeks ago and asked him where they hit at because it was one coin that had eluded me in all my 30 years of hunting. Seriously now...this whole conversation took place right before we started to hunt because we were still talking about the merc I found under the big chunk of iron just the day before at this same little area.
Anyway...we started to hunt and I passed over a lot of clad stuff at 3" to 4"...reason being is that I dug 8 clad dimes that were all in that range and they are an easy read on the SE. I hadn't even found a wheatie ....and was tooling along when I see my buddy diggin' to china. About 10 minutes later I pass him again...and he's STILL diggin' to China. I went over to him and ran the probe deep in the bottom of the hole...and bang...high flutey music. I said that's deep silver buddy. Well needless to say he plopped out a very very nice old silver coin (I'll let him tell and post when he gets around to it).
It was now about time to call it a day so I decided to try and get one last dig...even if it was clad before I quit. I ran the 6" coil over the same area as I had been and was getting the same clad hits at about 3" to 4". I then got another clad hit but it was just slightly deeper...maybe 4" to 5" so I thought what the heck...I'll dig it. Again...I was expecting nothing because yesterday I had dug at least 3 clad dimes that were 6" deep and I hate digging clad unless I'm VERY bored or it's a quarter!. Well I get down about 5" and out pops this ugly corroded disc. Honest to God I said to myself "here's my freakin large cent...a stupid Chucky Cheese Pizza token or something" I then go walking over to niterider_58 and laughingly say "hey buddy...check out my large cent...it's a freakin' chewed up pizza token or something". We both just laughed and I started rubbing it to see what kind of token it was. Well as I began to rub I noticed a greenish indian head color on parts of it but really didn't think much of it.
We got back to his house and he said go over to the sink and rinse it so we can see what kind of token it is. Well as I rinsed it I saw more green spots and then I thought I caught a glimpse of a star along the top. I yelled "hey..holy sh#$...I think this might be a coin". I then spotted a rim and another star..and we both just freaked when we realized it was a coin. He then snatched it and looked at it closer as my eyes are getting bad and was excited as I was. He said "that's a large cent"!!
Well now you get the picture. This coin had been in that ground for almost 200 years and was sitting there at 5" deep. It had been walked over a million times for some unknown reason. I had personally walked right over it about 20 minutes earlier but dismissed it as clad...but went back to dig it just because it was an inch or so deeper than the other clad hits. I'm glad I had someone there with me or I wouldn't have believed it myself.
The next day we both went back to that area...heck I blew off work as we just knew all those walked over clad hits were going to be nice coins. Wrong...back down to earth as each and every one was a clad dime just like I thought they were. However...just that ONE clad hit at 5" turned out to be my very first large cent and I'll never forget it. Thanks for reading and happy hunting.

great find, my freind dug a button the other day and we thought it was a large cent and that rush is awsome, congrats and keep em comin
You are right on...the rush is something I will never forget. Funny thing is that it didn't happen until we started to rinse it off in his sink. When I saw a star along the rim...I almost loaded my britches.

That's it Jim. If it wasn't for the Harley shirt...that signal would have just been another stinkin' clad dime. ha ha

It just goes to show that it pays off to dig even the iffy signals.
Thanks Merf.

Nice one silverfreak! Isn't it amazing how that happens; you start talking about a certain coin, start thinking about it a little bit, and pretty soon those thoughts just happen. It seems to happen SO often; we really should look into this. Like CAPTN's dream about the Walker and quarter the other night. Speaking of this and large cents, I was at a park about a month ago where I got one, and a walker not too long before. I was about 50 yards from where I'd dug the walker, looking at the spot and thinking about how it had been missed for so long, what it sounded like (nice and loud) and reimagined digging it... Just as all this was going through my head, I $#!& you not, I got a great high tone at the same depth, about 4 inches. I dug down thinking, "Haha, this couldn't be another one..." Then I felt something hard with my digger and joked, "great, I just scratched my new walker..." And guess what came out. Yep, another Walker.

It just goes to show, we need to figure out either how to think right about thee things to make them happen, or that maybe we're getting some hints from the future. Either way, it's pretty strange, and pretty cool...
Thanks. It is very strange and I'm just glad someone was there to share it with me. The look on our faces as I was washing it off and we started to see stars, etc...was priceless. We were like 2 little kids and I'll never forget it.
The fact that we were discussing large cents beforehand and how he was showing me one he bought at an auction just to see where it hit at...is just very very strange,

Congrats on the LC ! I havent been able to find a post by your bud. What was the coin he found ?
Thanks. He hasn't gotten around to posting yet. We are trying to figure out a way for him to do so. He doesn't have a scanner or digital camera. Anyway...he found a very nice seated dime about 20 yards from where my large cent came from.

Congratulations !!

It's true its been a secret of some of the greatest people alive. You can get and do anything you want, all you have to do is imagine it as yours in full brilliant detail. If things are right and your karma is OK, things line up and you will get what you have imagined. For most things what you think won't become right away because that would be bad if you thought Army Tank and then you dig one up, that would kinda suck. Remember the situation has to allow it, and if it can't allow it at that time it will line up for another time. Sometimes happing instantly and sometimes taking months or years. This is a powerful secret of ancient knowledge please choose wisely who you tell.

Keep @ it and HH!!

Your welcome bro. The uselfulness of that probe was never more eveident than on this hunt. Heck...I bet I got twice as much hunt time than he did. I watched him mess with just that one signal for at least 15 minutes and finally walked over to the hole...switched the probe on ...ran it in the bottom of the hole...and within 2 seconds said.."that's deep silver buddy". 10 seconds later he had a sweet seated dime in his hand. I can honestly say it's the best investment I made for this hobby...next to the detectors themselves. I looked for months for a used xlt sunray probe as this one works on the xl pro, xlt, 6000's, etc...and never found one. I then spent $170 for a new one and never looked back. Shoot..the worst thing that can happen is that if you ever decide to sell it...it will bring $125 toi $150 used. You can't lose.

I agree 100% and still feel a little strange about the whole scenario. I would have never believed any of it unless I was there and I'm so glad I had someone there to share it with. Now if our ladies will only grant some more hunt time. ;D

Sweet find on the copper. Your story was great and it had a good ending too. How many time did folks walk over that coin in the past 200 years? Coppers are great no matter what. I can see the wreath around the reverse. That is one cool coin and I'm happy that you finally found one. There has to be more in that area and apparently they are not lying too deep. I hope you hunt around there some more 8)

Thanks Ed. We will definately go back. Even though I skipped work the next day and we pounded the site again..only to find clad in the holes...I will hit it again and again and again. Where there's one...there's the possibility of another. I will be just as excited if my buddy finds the next one.

That's so ugly it's beautiful! I haven't had the pleasure of finding that coin yet. I don't care what it looks like if I ever do. Maybe someday. Have you been back to the site and rechecked for more since your post?
