Looks disgusting doesn’t it, although those swarms are actually wild honeybees, not flies. The wording on the apron puts it in Thailand, so the stuff in the foreground is probably ‘khanom mo kaeng’… a very sweet egg custard traditionally made with coconut milk and palm sugar, or some other similar sweet speciality.

Bizarrely, street vendors make no effort to keep the bees away because locals (but probably not tourists) regard them as a sign of authentic recipes that haven’t been padded out with cheaper ingredients and artificial sweeteners.

Honeybees or not, I about threw up in my mouth!

Fortunately, bees don't generally visit dirty areas or scavenge from trash bins and refuse piles. Any bacteria or viruses they're carrying are almost exclusively specific to bee health and not pathogenic to humans. I would also think that the amount of sugar in those kinds of desserts is such that they don't readily support bacterial growth.

I Thought for a Second I Saw Honeybees , But Still looked Disgusting :laughing7:

the amount is the Issue I Have.
Sort of like taking a Bite out of a Honeybees Hive :tongue3:

But I Probably Would Take a Small Bite of a Hive if Handed to me.

As for Flys, Most places Ive seen Have fan type Swatters Above their Foods. Was a Surprise they didn't. & Had Customers :coffee2:

Probably good for virility.

That’s always their excuse. Rhino horn, bear paw, pangolin scales, whale meat, etc etc etc

I never actually went to one (indeed, I certainly wouldn't want to) but in the parts of Thailand nearer to the Chinese border, I was told there are what they call 'Black Restaurants'. These undercover venues covertly offer illegal dishes... notably tiger meat, but also bear paws and other protected or endangered species of snake, freshwater turtle and monkey.

The touts for these venues will regale you with stories of 'Dancing Goat', where a live goat is tethered on a hot plate until it collapses and only the cooked feet are then served, but that particular 'delicacy' is just an urban myth.

On a lighter note, I went to the 'Royal Dragon' in Bangkok, said to be the world's largest restaurant. Although now closed, it was actually a complex of restaurants built on an 8 acre site around a central pond. In the outdoor areas, the waiting staff moved around on roller blades and even delivered food to the tables by flying in on zipwires!

I also went to a restaurant called 'Cabbages and Condoms', where they sold condoms as well as serving food, and a proportion of the profits went towards programmes for preventing unwanted pregnancies and limiting the spread of sexually-transmitted diseases. Somewhere, I have one of their branded ashtrays that I purloined but, in my defence, I did give them a donation in return by way of a generous tip.
