back in 1963 when i was going to a small jr. college in lousiburg i went freshwater fishing once, no luck, but i have been watching this fellow and his small daughter of late catching these nice crappie / crappy ?

so i asked him what he was using and how he rigged up for them.

float rig with small gold hook and piece of nightcrawler.

all week i have been thinking about these little buggers. i called my dirthunting guru buddy Mr Mountain Man and asked his opioion about bait, besides being a great relic hunter, he is pretty darn good freshwater guy also and i spent all my younger years catching saltwater fish and know nothing about fishing in freshwater. greg says use minows

so this morning before the storm i head to local tackel shop and buy my license, some baits and dozen minnows.................10 left.

good luck

Looks like you are off to a good start. I hear that crappie are a good eating fish?? I have never eaten one.

if you catch them on the potomac, don't eat em. Something about the fish there changing sexes. The males are now carrying roe.......way too weird to even think about eating.

Crappie are a seasonal delicacy here. When the dogwoods bloom fish with small jigs/leadheads or minnows off brush piles where they pile up before spawning. You have black nose and white crappie. I think they are as good or better than fresh grouper. Pan fried is best. Yummy ! Nice catch.

Whats this got to do with Detecting? ::)

when it comes to a fresh little pan fried crappie, that is treasure my friend, better than just about all fish except walleye

You go that right!

If you ever get tired of spending money on minnows, pick up a pack of "Crappie Magnets". You can buy 'em at Dick's or Wal-Mart (or BassPro). The best color combo I have found yet is a black body with a chartreuse tail. They are tiny but extremely deadly on Crappie regardless of size. You'll have to use ultra-light to light gear if you want to fish them without a bobbin (just cast out and reel in slowly) OR fish 'em under a bobbin (about 8 to 12 inches) and reel slowly. On a windy, choppy day, fish them under the bobbin - cast out and let the chop/wind do the "jiggin'" for you. I've used these to teach my 6 year old daughter to fish - fun times! Enjoy your treasure...

Really? I always threw them back when I caught them. Then again, whenever I fish freshwater I'm going for trout. Never even crossed my mind to eat Crappies. I guess it's something about the name, hahaha.

crappie is the best eating fish ive ever had...

You got that right!!! After you fillet them put a little salt on them and roll them in corn meal. Have a skillet of hot oil ready. Make sure the oil is deep enough to cover the fillet. Then all you have to do is go catch another stringer full because you will love them. They are the best fish to eat in the world.

Get the spot with the crappie rig and you'll fill that five gallon bucket full of 'em in no time. Yep, the Cheeseheads know crappie well and can fill your buckets and bellies with 'em as can many a FIB.
