Jeweler's mark?

Hello!

I dug this ring today in Corvallis Oregon today. I assume it's somewhat old because of the depth that I dug it at!

It's marked "STERLING" ~ the jeweler's mark is a "U" with an arrow through it. Anyone know who's jeweler's mark this is? What years were they in business? How old do you think this ring is?

Thanks for looking!
Neil

Re: Jeweler's mark?

Hey Neil, nice ring

Possibly Russian maker's mark, according to this site
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Jewelry-Gems-Minerals-689/U-Arrow.htm

The U with the arrow through it is something I have seen before but I don't know which country it was.

I beleive it was Eastern European, possibly Russian from some while ago but at present I can find no reference to it in the publications
.

Then there's wiki

trikikiwi, looks like you beat me to it. LOL
I believe the mark is made by UNCAS MANUFACTURING CO. 1911 to present.
"U" with an arrow going through it-since 1920 through at least 1988.

Neil,

Awesome find, Neil and I wish I could help. I had to post, though, when I saw the file name!! My kids think I'm ridiculous for loving metal detecting. I keep threatening to detect the high school, at lunch time, wearing a "I'm Lindy's Dad" T-Shirt.

Too funny.

A gold ring with a U with an arrow going through it is manufactured by Uncas Manufacturing. They began making their costume jewelry in 1911 and still do.
