I have not ever seen one yet.

After you have sorted through many halves you will be able to tell if they are silver when you open the roll and drop them on the table or when they hit against each other while you are pouring them out. I often watch TV while roll looking and I can tell over 90% of the time if there is a silver just by the sound. So you may want to take the halves that you think may be silver and compare them to the sound of a known 90% and a 40% when dropped on a table top.

Good Luck,

If you ever come across a 71D or 77D you will know.
It will be a 40%, their is no mistaking it you will know.

I found a 1977 40% half once, but did not know any had been made. I dumped it with all my other dumps, because as far as I knew, being a 1977, no way could it be silver.

Within 2 or 3 days I found out about these, and was pretty irritated that I had let it slip through my fingers.

Never again! ;D

There are not any 1971D 40% Silver or 1977D 40% silver.

There are not errors of this type reported by the mint, pcgs, or ngc.

If you find one is like finding a 1943 bronze cent.

Uh I do believe the red book does mention the 2 in the description below the list for those years.

If I remember correctly it says some were made in error. Suggesting a very rare find.

CoinMojo nails it. I've never seen one, but they are known to exist. There are silver clad Ikes for 1977 D when there shouldn't be.
