I have spent some time in that canyon since i was in high school. Before i even knew of the gold story me and my friends would go up there a few times a week. We found an area were the ground was sinking and you can tell it has been violently been worked years before (very large trees ripped down huge rocks moved). I was wondering about this a few years back and did a little research. I found the jones gold story . after a few years of messing around up there and talking to people i met a man named Rodger that works for the forest service. i work as a sub contractor of the forest service during fire season(i make fire ******ant for hunt fire ******ant/icl). so i come to find out that roger's father was one of the men doing the digging. on the second day of digging they found a stone doorway about 32 feet down. rodgers father said that there is know way you can point at the ground and know were something like this is unless you know it was there. As soon as they got that far he said c.i.d.(what that stands for i dont know) showed up and said cover it up. he said after someone said but we havent found it yet they asked again and it was covered over once more to never know what happend. As i was talking with Rodger a guy we call old man Jim that also works for the forest service chimed in. He was telling us about the day earlyer in the A.M. . He was at fire out post #1 at the bottom of the canyon and the guy smitty that was posted there with him dident sleep much. what was said that he seen was a convoy of deuce and a halfs escorted by m.p. cars go into the canyon about 3 hours later come rite back out. this was the morning before the second day. Is it still there? did they get it out? All i know is that they realy ripped into the ground there. if any one would like to go into the canyon and see it i would be glad to take you there.

Seems like the forest service would have taken it since it was their property at the time.
