Just Curious....How Many Here Use Rechargeable Batteries In Their Metal Detectors?

I detect often, so all my units use rechargeables. I save so much $$$ using them. I just can't imagine going to Costco often to buy alkaline batteries, then just throwing them in the garbage. What are your thoughts?

I get my batteries as stocking stuffers from Santa. 12 9 volt batteries for the pin pointer and 60 AA's for the detector.

Most of my detectors go 30-40 hours before needing new batteries, so I don't bother with my VLF units. With my PI machines, yes, I use rechargeable batteries, as they take 8 and pulse induction detectors drain batteries fast.

I still use alkaline because when rechargeables die they just stop. Besides not all rechargable batteries charge the same rate. I've had bad luck with them.

I use rechargeable AA batteries in my AT Gold and get around 20 hours of detecting time between charges. I do keep plenty of spares on hand in case they die in the field. Eventually I'll get some rechargeable 9 volts for my pinponter as well but am currently using Duracell quantum alkalines. They're a bit pricey but you can't beat the 50+ hours you get out of them in the Garrett carrot so I only need 3 or 4 per year. HH!

I use 9v rechargeables all the time in detectors and pinpointer.

A few comments:
My Tesoros run fine on 7v from a 9v battery. A lithium-ion 9v is 8.4v fully charged. NiMH are slightly higher. I'm assuming AA cells are the same way. Will your detector run stable on lower voltages?

Lithium-ion 9v are slightly larger in size, a hair longer, and a little "fatter", May or may not be a problem, the Tesoro battery door is pretty tight, I feel like it may crack so I only use NiMH now instead of Lithium-ion.

Lithium-ion may burn your house down when you aren't home. Seriously.....

In closing, don't buy the cheapest off ebay, batteries or chargers.

and 9v's in both my 580's and 360's pins a well.

Sheesh I use them in everything I use frequently... from my remote controls... to the thermostat.

Errr... I just realized you guys prolly going "hey his detectors don't take those"...

My X2 uses AA's...
Pulse... C's.
Ace... AA's...
IDX... AA's

In my MD tool box is a brick of recharged AA's and 2 9's.

NEVER run dead... Could detect for a week straight.

I guess i have been out of the battery market for a while. I went to the local grocery store to pick up a 9v for my pinpointer and almost went postal over the price. 9 dollars? Thank god i don't have my Garrett ADS 3 any more. Looks like rechargeable is in my future.

The best deal is at Sam's Club on reg batts...
Only they are Duracell bricks,,,
They say " Ten year shelf life".... but ?

Years ago I head to head batt tested Energizers VS Duracells...
Back then Energizer was the winner.
So if buying... I only buy them since.

I'll admit it. You can't beat the 2 9V Sunbeam in a pack for a buck at Dollar Tree. Heavy Duty, 50c each, I would buy new ones on the way to each hunt. One for the detector, one for the pinpointer. Chunk them after each hunt so they don't leak and destroy your equipment. Our county landfill has a bin for disposing batteries.



edit: I see their 4 pack alkaline AA are a buck also.

Tried several DollarTree stores lately, no more 4 pack alkaline AA batteries.

Just a two pack Panasonic alkaline or an eight pack heavy duty.

But still on DollarTree's website you can order and free ship to store.....
