Can you tell us where you found it Rick? :dontknow:
Was it on a farm, in a park or school yard or in a residential house setting?

These clues would help to identify what your item might be. :icon_scratch:

I'm not real sure, but it may be from an older latch similar to this one:

Looks like a lamp shade holder. Maybe the doo-hickee locked the shade down?

or a lantern handle, the tabbed thing is a hanger

Dave

Every inch of Long Island was farmed at one point. However there was a house within a hundred yards of where that was dug that went off the topo maps seventy years ago.

No idea.
The stamped with letters piece would be fun to try to lift a mason jar canning lid off with.
The bracelet looking part could fit around a jar neck for storage?

It has somewhat the look of a bail from a spin fishing reel. Maybe the "thumb" lever was a release mechanism? Just throwing out an idea.

Almost looks like a thumb control for a bicycle bell, but, all the ones I've had apart had teeth on the lever that engaged a gear. Maybe a different design? :dontknow:

I'm thinking along the lines of a can or bottle opener... but probably some other type of container.
Just having a little trouble visualizing it...

for holding the the top tight on a canning jar, before they were threaded

Good thought, Bigscott!!

Actually, given what it's attached to, it could be exactly that.
It's upside-down in the photo.

Imagine that this C-clip snap ring is tight against the rim of a bottle or other container.
In order to get the clip off, you press down with your thumb and the little lever arm pulls the c-clip away from the container.
The c-clip does not go all the way around the container.

I don't know how I missed that?

Doesn’t work on the two types I have with no threads.
The bottom pic has room above but it won’t swing towards the center more then in the pic and I have the glass tops for those jars.

I think it's part of the latch to hold the ring shut. Does the notch fit snugly on the wire?

key ring clip.jpg

I'm thinking there are pieces of the latch that are missing...

Will the latch slide around the bend next to the roller looking piece (or the other side) so that when you squeeze the ring it latches to the other end of the ring?

I here what you guys are saying about the ring and glass top but never found one that still had the wire ring or wire snap down type like grolsch still uses. I'll poke around this weekend and see if any are not rotted away in bottle dump from home that used that type.

No it won't. Its hardened a bit to have only a little flex.
