I'm a pretty avid CRHer. From that I've found that I pay much more attention to the coins I receive in change.

Anyway, I've been working for just over 2 weeks now and the grocery supply was getting a little low so I decided to make a run to town to restock. Whenever I go to town I ask around and see if anyone needs anything. I usually get quite the list since everyone knows whatever I buy is going on my expense account and I'll be reimbursed.

So I make the drive from the rig to the nearest Wal-Mart which is in Center, Texas. I spend a couple of hours getting supplies and other stuff off the want list. When I go to checkout, I ask the cashier if she can give me a dollar in quarters as I told the toolpusher that I'd pick him up a newspaper. The cashier said no problem.

Imagine how stoked I was when I looked at those quarters and saw a 54D Washington!!! I've never received a silver quarter in change!

I practically float back to the truck. Once I had the groceries loaded up I remembered that I needed to pick up a paper so I walked back up to the front of the store and bought one from one of those little machines.

I head back to the truck. Since I kind of feel the luck fairies are on my side I decided I'll stop by one of the banks and grab a box of nickels. So I start the drive back. I decide that instead of stopping at a bank in Center, I'll stop at the itty bitty crossroad town of Shelbyville and buy the nickels there. There's a bank right where I make the turn to head back to the rig... (I've found I have better CRH luck in smaller towns.)

10 minutes later I pull into the bank and walk in. I ask the teller if she has any handrolled nickels, which she does (she had more than I thought she would and was able to fill up a box). This little bank charges a nickel a roll to non account holders. No big deal... it's an extra $3.20 but the CRH will give me a couple of hours of something to do. Definitely worth it.

So I pull out the hundred dollar bill and 3 ones, then i reach into my pocket to pull out the 50 cents left over from the dollar I'd received back at Wal-Mart. I'll use the one that isn't silver... When I pulled out the two quarters my heart sunk into my chest. The 54D wasn't there... Where had it gone? Why did I just have these two stupid freaking state quarters in my pocket?

Then it hit me... That stupid newspaper. I'd spent my silver quarter on a stupid newspaper!

The teller asked me what was wrong and I gave her the short version, but I could tell she had no idea why I was upset. So I take the box and go.

There is a little bit of a consolation prize though. In the box of nickels I found 4 silvers, a 39S, a 36P buffalo, along with just over $4 pre 1960 nickels.

I still wish I had that quarter though.

Well that's not as bad as the young MDer who had found a silver dime and while playing with it accidentally swallowed it!!!!!!!!!!!! If you run a search on some of the old post you might find it. He was really embarrassed.

If he had swallowed it , at least he would have gotten it back eventually! :icon_jokercolor:

dude thats awesome! Yeah silver is pretty hard to come by in change! :)

I can relate to that. I was detecting an old part of town and found an 1891 tag of some sort. I was elated; put it in my pocket and kept detecting. When I got home it was gone. I just know I put it in my pocket without looking and dropped it back into the dirt. I was so uspset I even went back to the site and tried to find it to no avail. Its paved over now. Lesson learned the hard way.
