This was found this year by a new arrowhead hunting friend. Nobody hunts this spot, so he waited till around spring after the field was melted. Two axes, broken winged bannerstone, many blades, and points were also found. This tube bannerstone is museum quality and the two plow scars do not take away at all! What a find.

A truly exceptional piece...judging from the beauty of the stones they often picked there is much that we do not know about these people. Were the bands of some significance or just eye candy?

Green banded slate was a very common stone used by Native Americans. This piece has lines against the length. I think it's all in how the beginning shape of the rock that decides how the banding runs. But most often you see them making an effort about which way the lines run. Birdstones will have the banding produce eyes by having the lines run the length.

Outstanding, Congrats.

Molly.

WOW!!!!

Now that's what I'm talkin' about. It just don't get much better than that. That is a find of a lifetime right there. Any way you can get pictures of the other pieces he found.

Thanks for sharing the pictures with us.

Double WOW!!! That is on my to find list. Along with everything else.

Absolutely gorgeous! The odds of finding anything else like that in a lifetime are near zero!

Nice!!

I would like to have seen the hole being drilled in that one.

Rare bear! Thanks for showing us!

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. I'm not leaving my field until I find one.

Pardon my ignorance, but what would one do with that beautiful thing?

WOWzers!

That is a nice one. We dont have much slate here in Louisiana, but now and then some will appear. Unusual fluting...pehaps for the shaft...could go on or through it depending on the user?? Excellent find at any rate.

The conventional wisdom is that bannerstones of various types were used as weights on Atlatls. Some were attached onto the shaft others the shaft went through the hole.....I posted some photos from a site for reference.

Well, that makes sense. Thanks!

LOL,

Sorry....do a google search for atlatl weight or atlatl.....search images and go to the appropriate one. You can see many websites that have photos a little larger.

Just guessing but I think it was attached to the throwing part or Atlatl...if it was attached to the spear it would be back heavy. The spear shaft would lay in the groove nicely and help to keep it from falling off. The extra weight would provide extra energy on the downward arc of the throw.
