It's about 8" long overall and probably dates to the 30's-40's. Opens and closes by use of a sliding ring. The "prongs have flat edges like a screwdriver and are not pointed like the middle probe. Not in my possession but I will try and answer any questions you have. What is it?

What I'm thinking is that if it was never patented, it never took off. Perhaps the guy that made these things was the Ron Popeil of the 1920s. You know, fired off a million inventions and less than 10% ever took off.

If never patented this may be one of only a few ever made or the only survivor.

Pickle barrel tongs

I thought that also, But regular Tongs would make more Sense.

Ever try to stab something in Water ?

Unless it is Indestructible , odds are there would eventually be allot of Chewed up Pickles
Floating in that Barrel !

"Good Morning Mrs. Douglas, Wanna Buy some Pickle Shrapnel Today" ?

"We have some Mighty nice Pierced Pieces in there to take a stab at !"

I Hate Pickels, But Don't people prefer Perfect Pickles When they are Buying ?

I say not for something that can fall apart.
Or Bob when stabbing is attempted.

Really hope someone finds a match.

Well, we're sure all having a lot of fun with it! Maybe DCMatt has a good thought. Something that came in a shallow tin like some kind of pickled fish. I remember my Dad talking about his childhood memory of receiving a barrel of salted herring at my grandfather's country store in the 20s. They came in a large wooden barrel packed in loose salt. I suppose you could use something like this to pull them out with. The spike in the mouth and the grabbers behind the gill covers?

No patent or anything else on it to help identify. A true head scratcher.

That's a fact. I too looked at everything I could think of. Old sears catalog's, Kitchen gadgets from 1930's, 40's, 50's, looked at "vintage kitchen gadget's/tools, antique kitchen stuff, obscure, odd & forgotten etc., nothing. Looked at kitchen tongs, kitchen skewer's, kitchen tongs & skewer combo, nothing. I'm kinda going with Reanm8er, like did someone try to build a "better mouse trap" sort of thing? It does look like something that after you stab whatever it is, with thumb and forefinger you pinch with the tongs, OK, but for what? I don't know fella's, diggummup may have a one of a kind thing, like the ONLY one left in North America. I like it, just wish I knew just what in the !!!! it was used for. I tell ya, anyone who can find it, I'd vote "Honorable Mention".

I've been looking in the Ebay forums overseas. I haven't gotten very far yet but still no luck.

It would be cool if the moderators would create a new forum just for unidentifiable items. I would lure the most knowledgeable among us to look again maybe?

There are some organizations dedicated to collecting antique kitchen ware. Perhaps they could help?

Thinking outside of the box, maybe it is not a kitchen gadget. What I do not know.

I've already thought of that also.
maybe Shoe Maker Tool or Seamstress who works with Leather or ?

Also:

I Don't think the outside pieces are Child Proofing .
If they were, They would Not Curve out & Around.

They would also Need to be Closed for the Ring to Slide Down.

I don't think it is meant to be Stuck in a jar or anything with Liquid,
Because Having to Push the ring Down would Defeat the Purpose of Staying Dry.
along with the Mechanism & Persons hand would need to Fit in the Jar at the same time.

I Do think what ever it is Meant to Hold would Fit in the Oval,
and the ring pushed down After the Spike is in Place.

& IT must be there for awhile.

I Still think Fish lips would Fit in Perfectly, while scaling a fish.
But I never Fished.

or went frogging.

I love this game.

Thinking outside of the box, maybe it is not a kitchen gadget. What I do not know.

If it was a kitchen item somebody else would have found their Grandmother's by now.

Maybe it is still food related? Could be a grocery store or hardware store item?

Like for resealing a bag or something.:dontknow:

I think it's used to remove a mouse from a trap. You can hold them by both ear holes and their forehead.

OK, here's a new twist. We've been looking at this with respects of picking something up with it. I realized yesterday that the fork parts aren't spring loaded, so to pick something up with it you'd have to hold the forks open to get if around the object. Very awkward! But, when you hold it with the point up the forks fall out from gravity. What about some kind of picker for fruits or nuts?
Anything on a tree. Could be for something that smells bad or stains your fingers like black walnuts. I don't think it's for walnuts but that's an example. I agree with the original thought of kitchen tool because online research shows an awful lot of tools with that colored handle.
