Lamp holder??? or what

Found this. Very like items are found on Caboose's to hold the side markers, only they're a lot bigger. As you can see something clips to it that would have to prongs to fit it. being on an angle the item would tighten up as slid in. It is 4 5/8" long, 5/8" Deep and 1"Wide, and looks to be cast iron. Any help would be much appreciated.

thats the first thing that come to my mind! was there a such a thing as maybe a double blade wood planer?

Seems as it's only 1" wide that it wouldn't be a plane? Still think as a lantern holder?
