Lance head from the Sixth Pennslyvania Cavalry... Rush's Lancers!

Yesterdays digs... I had a great day with my third "Find of a Lifetime" this summer. My first was a Civil War Spencer carbine. My second... you'll have to wait just a little longer, but it WILL BLOW YOU AWAY! Here is my third. This is a Civil War lance head from the Sixth Pennsylvania Cavalry unit known as "Rush's Lancers". It was a very famous unit from the upper crust of Philadelphia society. A lance is basically a spear that cavalrymen would try to use to stab the enemy. Of course, by the time of the Civil War, long range muskets, repeating rifles and rifled cannon made a lancers term of service very hazardous. Not long into the war the Lancers threw away their lances and were issued modern carbines. And I found one of those lances with part of the wood shaft still attached!!! I'm very excited and have always dreamed of finding one of these since first reading about them in the book "The Illustrated History Of American Civil War Relics" way back in '78. Wahooo....

Here is an up to date shot of my Spencer carbine I found a few weeks back. I think I'll keep it in this condition.

Thanks for checking out my post!

Here is a painting of Rush's Lancers. Notice the streamers attached to the lance head and the attachment devices on the one I found. Very cool...

Nah... I already have one of those and this is way cooler, at least to me. Some may think it just junk. But I like it. :icon_scratch:

Nice find on the lance! Don't know if you know or not, but those two brass ovals look like the barrel wedge plates for an old musket. I wish I had a spot like yours!

Hi NOLA-K... If you mean the green ones, I believe that they are parts to a saddle. We find them in Cav camps pretty often. Thanks for the comment..

Great finds Beau! :notworthy:

Sure wish I had creeks up here that were chock full of lead bullets and Spencer Rifles! :D

Super, super finds!!!! I've been a CW buff since I was a little kid (both sides of my family fought) and heard the stories from my
g-grandfather and grandfather. I am absolutely in awe at what you find, seriously in awe. Everytime I log on I check to see if you have discovered something new, and as usual, it's something great. It amazes me that these items are underfoot.
Great stuff!!

Are these spots that you knew were forded during the war or would the water have since carried the relics down river?

They do look very similar! Check out this post with pictures of a saddle and what I believe I probably found. Very interesting... http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php?topic=397555.0

And joeyfresh... I go all sorts of places to include fords, home sites near water, mills, etc. I'm sure some stuff just gets washed down too.

Defiantly Banner! I cant even find any of these on line shown in museums, and doubt many, if any, exist.
