Landowner question.

I have been metal detecting my sister's yard. Each time I do, she and her kids come out to watch. Here is the dilemma . Her 8 year old follows me around calling "dibs" on what comes out of each hole. I gave her a wheat penny and some clad. Today I pulled a silver bracelet out and my sister put it on and said she was keeping it. She finally gave it back, but I could tell she wanted to keep it. How should I handle this? I don't want to get anyone mad, but also don't feel like having someone standing over my shoulder taking anything cool I find.

Here is the problem, it is her yard!!! Either you will have to sit down and come to some fair agreement or hunt elsewhere!

That's what I would do. I asked to hunt a property and the guy said since it was his yard he got to keep what I find. Told him well when u go and pay what I did for a detector u can keep everything u find.

IHMO. Seeing as you asked for permission which she gave you and since it is her property I would give the finds to her ( not the kids ) if she wants them. It isn't like it is a stranger where I would let them pick one or two things I found if they let me hunt their property but your sister should have a little more consideration I would think. I might even give everything I found just to hunt a interesting property but then again that is just me.

For me anyway it isn't in keeping ALL the goodies I find but the hunt and just seeing what I can find in a new area.

thats a tough call im not sure what id do in i have a problem when it comes to kids i kinda cave and basically give in i like to c kids smile i guess and hey there is always goin to be more finds more places to go ur only at one so even if u caved and gave in all the goods found it will give u more time with ur machine and a new ground to cover however if it bothers u to much do what another had said and hunt there when they arent home u have that upper hand considering its ur sisters house good luck

Well, I called and struck up a deal. I offered her any and all items I find, except coins and tolkens. I told her she could have the bracelet if I could have my 1912 cigar tolken back. She said no problem. She thought that was a fair deal. I'm good with it as her yard has yielded 3 merc dimes, one 1895 indian head, and about 15 wheat pennies (and quite a bit of clad). It's never been hit and the house was built in 1921. I'm sure there is more and now that I don't have to worry about having my coins looted by the kids, I can simply hand them cool relics and send them into the house to mom.

Thanks for the replys. I think all is good now and I do feel better about it. She also scored me access to her neighbor's yard, which is untouched too.
