A friend and I were hunting in Port Arthur, TX and I found this item. I am not sure what it is...the only thought that has come to mind is that it may be the tip of one of the hands of a clock (I know...huge clock, like one in a clock tower or something). The short side looks like it may have been attached to something at one time. Any ideas?

Weight: 3.88oz (109.9g)
Length: 2in (51mm)
Width: 1.5in (39mm)

Maybe brass weight from a nested set? Although triangular shape would appear unusual.

Not sure if there is enough room to "nest" another item...the nested item would have to be much smaller.

That's true, but the missing weights could also have been larger than this one.

Maybe it's a weight inlay for wood (maybe tool). The brass is hollowed in order not to become too heavy yet still fit dimensions.

Interesting that the length and width are "even" units when using inches.

Maybe it's a magician's trick piece. You have several triangular cups (only one hollowed out both sides). You can make your penny show up in different stacks of cups based on which side is flipped up ;D

Beep, could you try shoving something into both sides of the Whatisit,
to see if either of the two sides make sense as a mold?

stuffing the indentions is why i suggested 'prototype' or even a reusable dog bone.

but, no kidding! because the brass shows no wear could it have been enclosed inside something else?

Is there any chance this could be a brass surveyor's marker of some kind to be embedded in concrete or the street?

Could this piece be a bearing of sorts?

Would make a dandy doorstop... What gets me are the striations on the sides. It appears to me that the brass was sand casted and then "pressed" in a form to cause the grooves on the sides. To me that indicates that the outside of the piece was more important than the indentations on the top and bottom.

My best guess is that this piece may have been used as a bending form or perhaps a coil winding form which might explain why it was made of brass.

Neat find in any case.

CWH is really bright for his age, don't you think?

Although it's a bit after the fact, since CWH's post and others' responses were made three months ago, it's worth pointing out that— as noted in other threads— his father is a surveyor, and CWH works with him part time.

So, when he suggests that, based on his experience, the item may not be survey-related, that comment deserves serious consideration.

Why am I mentioning this? From the TNet Forum Guidelines:
