I'll be in New Mexico later this month and looks like I'll have access to a metal detector. We are going to be in Las Cruces and ToC for a day, so if anyone knows of any good hunting grounds you're willing to share then I'm all ears. I was thinking I could find some cool stuff on the WSMR but would need to go to restricted areas where there won't be anyone to run me off. Just kidding! 😬

Hello are you still in the area? I went out in the organs yesterday going tomorrow again. I have a buddy that showed me the old Butterfield trail.

No, I wasn’t able to make it to NM. I hope to go there in December but I don’t know if we’ll go to LC or ToC this time. Edit: I hope you had some good luck and found something interesting.

Sounds like you'll be looking for historical artifacts - coins, bullets, buttons, et al. There is plenty of picked over junk here and there in the populated sites around Las Cruces and TorC, but it may be more interesting for you around Fort Cummings, about 50 miles NM of Cruces, off Hwy 26, dirt road to 32.464, -107.646. It's cavalry fort ruins and an old Butterfield stage stop. Continuing west from there on the old Butterfield Trail through Cookes Canyon, there are numerous Apache skirmish sites around the many old roadside graves of ambushed travelers.

Awesome thank you very much. I've been on the hunt for spanish and knights treasure but have run into a few people who have found some awesome stuff. Thank you for the heads up I'm gonna check that out for sure!
