Last hunt of '09 - Into the woods

Hi all:
I don't know how many of you have been inspired by Giant's woods finds, but I surely have. With all the Christmas parties and relative visits over, I've been eager to do a woods hunt. My girlfriend Kelly came down with her nephew for a visit and, with several of my kids joining us, we headed for the woods. I've been wanting to hit an area where my neighbor told me an Indian lived in a tipi back in the 60's. The kids ran around while we hunted, the ground was nice and soft, and no mosquitoes or poison ivy. We came away with a neat ring (no markings), a '37 Merc, and a pocket spill of two Wheats ('44D & '50D) and a '55 Canadian penny, which was a first. We also found some kind of horse thing that we think may be a seal for wax. Any ID help would be appreciated. Also dug an old hand trowel. (age?) So, for the definite last hunt of the year, we were happy.

Great hunt and finds Anne congrats on a bunch of great finds too, the quartz crystal is cool, it must be you just used it to display the ring, I found a whole bunch of them in the woods last year next to where I was digging a target in a woods and all I could think was how the heck did these get here cause I don't think large crystals like that are just laying around in the woods.

WOOO HOOO!!! You go girls! The ring looks sterling. Not sure can't see the horse thing too well.

The round horse thing turns out to be part of a cufflink. Who'd of thunk it? Thanks to mcmich over in the "What's it" thread for solving it.

Here’s my favorite cufflinks because of the old school clasp mechanism. On the back they say “Patent MCH30 1880″ which hasn’t turned up much information. The clasp works by pushing on the pins on either side which opens the hole for the clasp.

Those are great finds Anne! Winter must be alot kinder to your location. Dadburn lake effect. Just had 11 days off, and the snow came right away. Have a great winter. Muleskinner
