Late 1700s to early 1800s homestead tips

Going to be my first time ever metal detecting on our property, so a noobie here lol What would I expect to find, and how would I go about metal detecting, maybe making like a grid pattern? It's the Homstead in the back with a big front yard, then there is a creek that runs through the front of the lawn. Thanks
