So I did my first smelt yesterday. I thoroughly mixed and divided the charge into 2 halves fired one then the other 300 grams of cons + flux in total.
The two buttons I got back are highly dissimilar Button number one, small and bright. button number 2 dull and scaly. I used a basic flux working on a 100/20/20 by weight flux measurement. 100 is lye. I dropped the crucible in the cone mold on the first go round, so I re-smelted the glass slag in the second batch.
Anyway on the second pour which went much better I could not get the button to separate from the slag and it is all rough and scaly.
Can anyone tell me what this condition indicates? I am certain I need more silica in my recipe as the pour is extremely viscous.
What does the clingy , scaly slag indicate? There was no visible mat layer in the glass.
