Found this in a corn field yesterday. Have no idea what it is. It is just under 1" in diameter, 0.18" thick, 2 - 0.165" countersunk (both sides) holes through it. Pretty sure it is lead. Has 2 dates "DEC ? 82" over "DEC 12 32".

Any thoughts???

I may be wrong because I have never seen one with holes
in it, but,

It looks like a type of bale seal.

Here is a site that tells some about bale seals.

http://www.colchestertreasurehunting.co.uk/baleseals.htm

Most are found in Europe, but they were used in the US
until the mid 1800s.

Here is a bale seal I found,

Oh,

That date is probably

"DEC 12.32"

That would mean December 12, 1832

Or it could mean December 12, 1732

It is history what ever it is.

tabdog, I have a question about your seal. It looks like a hinged two disk folded seal, yet it seems to have the remains of two steel wires though it. Is that correct?

John, does it say PATENTED above the dates?

Good eye Cy. I see what seems to be an A also.

Doesn't seem to be the right design, but neither does that first date look like Dec to me. The second letter can't be an E but might possibly be a C ? (Oct?) (They wouldn't have abreviated the first date to "DC" would they?)

The surface is rough but I could also conclude that it might be an A. PAT'D could fit there, but I do not see it.

It is not magnetic. 99% sure it is lead.

Like the dress weight idea. The patents I've seen here are different than mine. I imagine mine was sewn to the hem throught the 2 holes. Very cool.

Thanks Cy and Johnnyi

Johnny, When I dug it the DEC was quit clear on the first date. I do see what you mean. I think the E has been damaged. This item was in a plowed field.

I dont know. :-\ Are there any side slots? Your object is different than pictured but dont forget the patent is for the idea and it doesnt necessarily have to match. I think its unusual to have 2 patents in the same month. The hem weights I have seen looked like this.

Cy, I don't know either, but your hem or dress weight idea carries more "weight" than the rest. :D

I have one like that too. This one is much heavier. Just weighed it:

15.2g
.535oz
.490ozt
9.8dwt

The other kind are like a tenth the weight. Maybe it was for a coat.

They made different sizes.
