Let's Discuss Banner Finds

First, this isn't to rain on anyone's party, "congratulations Dave" but his recent post has brought up an interesting subject, "What constitutes a banner find?" Quite frankly, I wouldn't even know how to go about setting those guidelines? What a banner find might be one person may not be all that special or rare to another? And "value"....don't think you can just run with this either. So given the wide range of potential banner possibilities, how would you, or could you, establish a means that's fair across the board?

Per example, beach and shallow water hunters are often exposed to "valuable discoveries" as we see them posted quite often, but where do we draw that line on value, how do we draw that line on value? A $3000.00 diamond ring is a great find, for sure, but is it really rare and banner worthy? I don't know? I'm just asking how something like banner finds could be fairly supported across the board. Take old bottles, for instance, which ones would be a banner find and which ones wouldn't be for those guys who love to hunt for old bottles?

I can see where voting might have a lot to do with establishing a banner find but some areas within our hobby are far more popular then others, so should the less popular potential finds be left to this same, "volume of voting?" What are your thoughts on this subject? :dontknow:

:dontknow: I personally have no Problem with it :dontknow:

Of course if others decide they have to Compete :(
my opinion may change.
as Bodies are not necessarily (I can't believe I'm saying this :( ) treasure Related

The REAL treasure in Sandman's picture is beyond the "skin" and it IS the beach and what might be found under the water!
I wish I was there now instead of here on the Cape in the rain. If the beach is on the east coast of FL Sandman is one lucky detectorist!

Yes but, will she still be a banner in fifty years?

You've been detecting too long. :laughing7:

I think the best treasures are the memories which we can not show photo's. Seeing eye candy is just as important to find as a nice ring. At least to us old walruses.

Amen to that brother!!

Regarding banner finds being based on "value" I have seen rare bottles and Indian stone points. I think that whatever people find interesting should end up on the banner. It's the People's Choice Award for treasure finds. If gold coins become blaze` because everyone is finding gold coins, we'll stop seeing them on the banner. Same goes for jewelry or old coins. I wouldn't think too hard about it.

Where the hell is the Banner anyway? I have looked for the Banner Forum and can't find it. I am using the iPad app so I dont know if that has anything to do with it, but I wouldn't think so. Oh, and again, I vote for my platinum diamond ring for a banner find....come on!!! LOL!

I've read some wonderful posts on this site and they are all Banner to those that posted. Most all did not get Banner recognition but I loved reading the stories. That's what this site is about to me. I like sharing what I find and seeing what others are finding....Other than zinc pennies they are all Banner Finds.

Let me point out, "that body is wearing jewelry." So while it may look to be just a body to the unseasoned beach hunter, Sandman is just demonstrating his superior skill in spotting great places to look for treasure. Dang, Jeff, I can't believe you missed all that jewelry she's wearing as she's heading into the water.

I got your back Sandman! :laughing7:

Such a thread. I really like Sandman's philosophy and plan on adopting it when I return to the States. Too many devious characters...
But the bottom line is really like everything else we've encountered or will encounter in our lives.
"One man's trash is another man's treasure", who's to decide?

P.S. I'm not a sexist. I married a woman and I still find that there is a little treasure in every woman.

It is the members that make the Banner bar. I think a lot of things should make banner but other members must not agree because it never gets the votes. You have good hunters on here and most do not hunt for the banner bar. I think everything on top looks pretty nice and I would have been happy to have found any of them.

I find that I cannot tell a lie. In all honesty I never notice the eye candy, far, far too dedicated a treasure hunter for that. Looking at such things could cause me to stray off course, screw up my perfect grid patterns, miss an inch of sand, possibly even miss another pull tab. Real treasure hunters would never allow themselves to become distracted in such a way. I mean, it's 95 degrees, sun beading down on me like an over set broil, I've not had a tone in nearly an hour. Do you really think dedicated treasure hunters have time for such sight seeing? Noway, nohow, ain't ever gonna happen! Has never happened! And never will happen!

Lol! Just admit it! You like it. :laughing7: Treasure.

Now, I might inspect one from time to time if I feel she has all the qualities required that could possibly make her a good treasure hunting partner. But it's always about treasure hunting and treasure hunting only. I'm a very dedicated treasure hunter. :laughing7:

I thought this would have made banner and its real I see more gold coins found than these so I guess value and rarity of findings don't countrolex4%20007.webp

The submariner would have my vote.

I voted 'banner' on that Maryland Cross Confederate regimental hat insignia somebody posted awhile back. Very few Maryland infantry regiments fought in the Army of Northern Virginia. Glad to see that find made 'banner'.
