Life in 1900

Last week found a 1900-s barber half in a box. Wondering this topic.

The average worker made $12.98/week for 59 hours. So a 50 cent was a lot of money, somewhat like today's $20 bill. It was the work-horse of currency and that's why it was so worn. On the other hand, image carrying a $100 bill in 1900!

What else is noticable: Man only lived up to 46.3 years on average. A lot of us on this forum would be dead in that era. Thanks to modernization (medicine, science and technology, etc) so we can live to 30+ more years. It is nice to be in 2010

I think worth of coins currency should be based on the date it was made. A 1900-S Half should be worth 100 bucks now!

Thank Yinzi for putting things into perspective. People get nostalgic about the old days and forget that they were hard too. I'll take 2010 and my 80+ years of life expectancy.

footnote - the average age was so low because of early death rate. People not dying in first year of life lived quite a bit longer. Odd how numbers work. the average 80 year old now lives 6 more years.

I think i would have rather lived back then..sure techolodgy and medicine is much better..but respectful people?..Not so much...
