Walked up on this today, I thought it was a broke blade until I turned it over. Large flaking with some secondary work and a lightly ground base. Made of some kind of local marbled chert I think, Any opinions?

I'm still not sure I've seen the other side of that to get a mental handle on it, but from the outrepasse flaking, I'll repeat my earlier opinion : Early.

Conceiveably an abandoned preform. Maybe a core tool. :dontknow:

I agree with your assessment, There's just not quite enough to make a confident call. Appreciate your opinion and time.

It looks like it's made out of the same stuff as the corner notched one the other day.

I think you're right, same black and brown marbling, good eye.

It's hard to tell from the pictures. Looks like a blade core or a celt.

Is it anything like this one ?

It's tough to get a good picture of. It's similar to that, but yours looks like a finished piece with complete edgework. This one is a biface, I took three more pics, reverse side, and basal area.

Appreciate all the opinions.

From the view of your first picture in quote above, it looks just like a hoe. I have approx 40-50 whole hoes that look like that.

The site it came off is early archaic, kind of rules out the need for agricultural tools. I agree the basic form looks similar but this piece is much smaller than any hoe I've ever seen. Thanks for the comments.

You can't rule it out because you have found archaic pieces at the site, good sites were occupied over many thousands of years because of the availability of water and cover. Even if it is a mile or more away from a river, rivers change and move over millenniums.

The piece on the left side, lower left cornor is a hair under 5 inches long, 2 inches wide and 7/8 inch thick. if it was broke in half it would be less the 2.5 inches long.
The brown one behind it is 4 3/4 inches long 2.5 inches wide and 1 inch thick...........
Some where I have a large box full of broken hoes, points and so on. I picked them up by the hundreds.

Treasure hunter, you're right I shouldn't rule it out, anything is possible. Nice group of hoes there, were they found in Fla.?

Hey thirty,

No all are from Missouri, I hunted creeks, streams and fields for over 20 years there. Check out my profile sometime, I have more...............

Find alot of pieces like that make ya scratch your head we call em problematics...Nice find...

It's sort of tough to see because of the material but this piece has outre passe flaking on the " unfluted " side. Large flakes across the entire face. ???
