I didn't find your button on this site, but I thought it might be a helpful resource. I found the part about old clothes being used for fertilizer interesting. I noticed a lion-on-anchor button was used by the South African Navy, but the lion isn't rampant and is facing in the opposite direction.

Woolen clothes & shoddy were used on the fields in our area to lighten the heavy clay.

Here is an HEIC Naval Officer button 1833 - 55:

I'm not up my HEIC history enough to know what happened to their soldiers and sailors after the company was dissolved in the 1870's, but I'm confident many of the men continued in the same career. Maybe they dropped the Crown from the uniform buttons?

Of course, I'm just guessing.

I took another look at the back-mark & with some detective work (lots of letters missing), it is as follows;
c.1865-1875

S.W. Silver & Co. Clothiers

London

Therefore the timeframe is at least correct. So could be on the right track.

I have found 18th C East India Company Buttons, so one of my first thoughts when I dug it was it might be connected. But can't find a match, must be fairly scarce, I guess.
