Had it this morning... "google" Balance Rock - Harkening Hill. Shadows from the Sun created what appears to be a LION'S HEAD from a certain "angle" (position).

No, it looks more like my ex-wife, but not as good looking.

[Rebel - KGC]

Wife & I are gonna go up to it TODAY... take "pics"; look for carvings on surrounding trees. An "over-niter" at THE LODGE! YAY!

[Rebel - KGC]

Hey Rebel, What does rooms rent for up there at the Lodge, now. Usually reasonable as they have no television or telephones.

True... with AARP card; @ $ 86.00 a nite. Going up @ 11am; check-in @ 3 pm. "Hike" up to JOHNSON FARM; then up Harkening. 2 or 3 Balance Rocks to look at; MAY see Purgatory
Mountain from there... DUNNO.

[Rebel - KGC]

AND! Ppl thought it was Johnson Orchard... NOPE! Johnson Farm; reading PV's (RIP) book about the history of the area... LOVE IT! BAD news... it is ALL "Fed land". NO MD'ing, NO TH'ing, etc; just hiking, taking "pics", "nosing about"... LOL!

[Rebel - KGC]

Watch out for those bears they are everywhere up there. The bears will be near the apple orchards mostly at night but be careful anyway.

THANKS! I know; NOT gonna be out at nite, ANYWAY... LOL! Will keep ya informed by e-mail or something.

www.cnyhiking.com/HarkeningHillBalanceRock01002.jpg YAY! GOT IT!

[Rebel - KGC]

Looks like a Lion's Head to me. Great photo Rebel.

HA! From THEIR web-site... don't have "dig-cam"; ANYWAY; getting a late start... BUT! Later, FUN, FUN, FUN! (Sunny, cool day...)

[Rebel - KGC]

Been there, done that; FED land... franklin, you have 11 CD-books left at the Bookstore. Restaurant, Bookstore CLOSING at the end of November, 2012; NO MO "over-niters" after that. Place crowded with Vet Day partiers & HOO HAHS... FULL! Franklin, get yer CD-Books and put 'em in Bedford City/County Museum, and Visitors Centers at Bedford City, & Lynchburg... maybe even at Smith Mountain Lake; seen interest at ALL of 'em. Good Luck!

Bear meat taste good and it is free.

[Rebel - KGC]

OK, franklin; got ya... BUT! Lodge is CLOSING down PERMANENTLY... there IS NO Spring. YOUR loss.

[Rebel - KGC]

I did not know they were closing for good. I thought someone else was buying the shop and Lodge?

YEP! For good... they are trying to get a PRIVATE "contract" to keep Lodge going; stuff in Bookstore is/are 50% off; NOT sure about YOUR CD Book (11 copies); NOTHING is being "re-stocked"... doesn't look good. If no private contract appears... Lodge is CLOSED, Nov. 30, 2012. Call 'em.

[Connecticut Sam]

I did and nobody answer the telephone.

[Rebel - KGC]

NOT surprised...

[Rebel - KGC]

The Lodge is now CLOSED; no mo "over-niters", no mo dining in the restaurant; just memories, now... SAD!

[Rebel - KGC]

Too Bad. Really going to miss it. I get the money I will open it back up all year round. By the way Rebel, they already paid me for the CD Books so I haven't lost anything. Thanks for the information though.

OK,10-4.
