Did some coin roll hunting today. In a old roll of pennies two of these little gold coins were stuffed in between the coins. They are small. Dates are 1854. On the back is a 1/2 and California Gold with a bear maybe. I've never seen anything like this. What did I find?

Do you ask for anything specific (other than what type of coin you want)?

Just ask for whatever amount of $$$$ you want to spend and get in any denomination coin you would like. $100 in pennies, $100 in dimes. You get the idea.

I will have to give it a try sometime...and congrats on your finds!

Cool KTM.
Do you use it to get back into the forest?

Yep!

froggenfish, I would suggest that you check out CRH threads on this site, so you will get a better understanding. The explanation you got was correct, but really didnt give the full idea of what its about. For one thing, people arent searching for gold coins, they are looking for silver, or key dates. Just learn how to not piss the banks off, that seems to be the biggest trick.

If you Google search,"California Fractional Token", and Images, you will see all kinds

Kuger is correct. California fractional tokens were made from California gold found during the gold rush in the mid 19th. Careful, though, it's well known among collectors that coins with bears on them were frequently counterfeited.

Btw, in regards to CRH, I just occasionally go to the bank and ask for a brick of something. A brick is a standard-value box of rolls; pennies, which I usually get, are $25. If you get them as a withdrawal, it doesn't "piss the banks off".

No stupidity on your part frogginfish. There's a chapter under "treasure hunting" section devoted to it. This will get you there. Coin Roll Hunting HH ! Rick

BTW.. DGRS2 Great finds !

Looks like a repro .. but I would get them checked out anyways. Good luck!

Looks like California fractional gold. From what I understand there are a lot of fakes out there. There are people on eBay even who sell fake fractional tokens implying that they are real. I think being that you found in a penny roll they could be fake. But for sure get em checked out. You never know.

I'll bet that got the heart pumping when you saw that in the roll!
