That IS very cool! What a neat-o find.

I saw this on-line: #4080. An Ink well in the form of (we believe) an English 19th century Fireman's Helmet. Age: late 19th early 20th century. Material: white metal with porcelain ink pot. Size: 3.5" tall. Condition: scuffing and wear to the plated surface. The hinge functions as it should, though the pin in the hinge may be a replacement.

Maybe it is an inkwell holder?

I was gonna say little green men, but that's too easy.

very cool find. I like the inkwell theory, you'd think it would be something practical.

It looks vaguely german, or prussian, like WW1 type. That does sound too small to be an inkwell tho'.

I should have posted this other picture... it shows the inside of the previous inkwell helmet I posted, with a cone that resembles the one you found. Yours could have accepted a little porcelean bowl as well... ???

I Have To Agree With Tinpan, It Looks Like It Was Modled After A French WW1 Helmet, Note The Ordinance Badge On The Front, That The French Used On Their Helmits. trk5capt...

Looks like tinpan beat me to it. Either French of Belgian.
