little help

So i have roughly 6 dateless buffalos I have found in circulation 2 of which are only dateless due to a red gunk on the surface. I also have 2 gross looking old wheats that i wana clean up but just get the gunk off not give the coins an artifical shine. I've used water but dont want to rub the coin and ruin a could be date off. any household items suggested to help get this stuff off? still new here sorry if its a noobie question would rather ask here then somewhere else

I've heard olive oil is good at removing gunk

Alcohol and solvent are options as well.

Regular rubbing alcohol or pure acetone are the closest things to household items that you might have available to you.

WD-40 followed by dish soap and water might take care of gooey stuff on the coin.

Hi; The best stuff I found or removing "anything" ADHERED to any sufrface, especially metal is Laquer Thinner. It removes everythig very nicely and it evaporates Outwards away from the object instead of Leaching into the object ok. Then just a fast rinse and your all set. I don't know but it has worked for me ok. PEACE:RONB

My dealer has told me baking soda will clean the dirt off filthy pennies although I have never tried it. He has told me how to safely and properly clean silver coins with baking soda and water and says it will also get the dirt off other coins, although I have only cleaned a few silver coins.
