DAY 1
I went to a small set of athletic fields I haven’t been to in over 2 years hoping for some new losses. I spent 3.5 hours swingin the CZ21 before the heat got to me and found 34 coins with a face value of $1.30, a koala bear pin, an ADDIDAS football spike, a #31 race car fob, aluminum tie wire for fencing, can slaw, some foil, a few aluminum bottle caps, 17 tabs and one pencil end.
Very few new losses near the surface. I hit all the high traffic areas and a small tot lot on the edge of the fields. Most of what I found was in areas I haven’t gridded.
DAY 2
I went back to the basketball court where I found the old good luck token recently and started grid searching the grass around the court. I spent 5 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 97 coins with a face value of $6.06, a wheel less toy car, an old padlock, a buffalo nickel, a shaker top, a D buckle, a wristwatch case, can slaw, some foil, aluminum bottle caps and 31 tabs.
This place was bottle cap central. The aluminum bottle caps sound just like coins on the CZ so I dig them even when I am cherry picking. Normally I only find a few, but the side I gridded was loaded. I dug 47 and they are a wide variety of soda caps, no beer caps here so far.
The padlock is a nice old solid brass one. It doesn’t have any name on it that I can find, but I like it.
The buffalo nickel is in rough shape, but it does have a date. It was hard to get the right angle for the picture so you can see how clear the date is. It is a 1928.
So this hunt was much better for only doing a side and a half of the court. Lots more ground to cover inside the fence.
DAY 3
Back to the more modern scout camp (opened in 1980). This time I went to the troop sites not used during summer camp. These sites are for rent all year long and the troops bring their own tents (no big camp tent pegs to find, yeah).
I spent 6 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 151 coins with a face value of $8.67, 8 camp tent pegs (used by troops for tarps), a hammer, a ninja star, a coat hook, a pair of pliers, a good knife, a small brass ring, 2 neckerchief slides, a sinker, 2 tent loops, 3 tent cord tensioners, 2 Canadian pennies, 2 zipper pulls, a clevis pin, a collapsible cup, personal tent pegs, chunks of foil, aluminum bottle caps and 8 tabs.
I will clean up the hammer and give it to the camp ranger for use around camp. The pliers and ninja star will be recycled scrap metal. All the big ferrous metal close to the surface gives me a bell tone for overload on the CZ21 the same as the camp tent pegs. I dig those most of the time because you never know what might come up and sometimes a better signal is masked by the large item close to the surface. I don’t want to miss a goodie.
The knife is a Scout knife with Be Prepared (the scout motto) on the blade. Another nice knife to sell. The slides will be tumbled and spray painted for scouts to use. All our new scouts get one and I’ll have to give some to other scout leaders because I have over a hundred to get rid of.
Only 3 days this week and even less next week. I have been having back problems for weeks and the primary care said less metal detecting until I go to physical therapy and get the ok to go back to my usual routine. I’m also not supposed to carry anything heavier than 10 pounds. Between my back and the screwy weather I can’t get a break. LOL
