Logging 'tools of the trade' that I found yesterday.

Was out for 4 1/2 hours yesterday and came upon a small lumbercamp, but found nothing worthwhile. Decided to detect along the tram roads in the hollow where the camp was.I found the auger and shovel side by side, and the mattock head further along the grade. I found yet another log chain near the head of the hollow. It has one good hook on it and is 15 foot long.

Great finds, LC! Do you have an idea of the age of the items?

Uh , sorry Country Girl, I don't tell anyone where I dig. I don't even tell my wife where I am going. If I get injured they would have to send Search and Rescue out to find me.
Nana40, from the lumbering photos that I have of the area, I would say the items date from the late 1890's.

If the chains were used to secure the logs to a big flat bed trailer they are called "boomer chains". And I bet they weren't that hard to carry out. When I have a good find my feet barely touch the ground for several minutes! ;) :D Monty

I carry the stuff out in plastic feed bags. And the chains, I usually drag them behind me.

Another great bunch of finds lumbercamp. There's a lot of history there.

My lumbercamp hunting is over for this year but I'll stay busy cleaning hundreds of relics I dug. This was my best year in 40 years of THing. And to think that back in the 70's we believed metal detecting was nearly finished.

Nice finds!
