Long Old Pointy Handtool?

Not sure what this was for . It has beveled edges and a very sharp point - a little curved at the point . About 17 inches long . Seems like it must of had a special purpose . Any ideas ?

I believe Two Dogs nailed it.It has been over 40 years since I've seen a babbitt bearing scraped but the tool did seem familiar.My vote would be a bearing scraper also.

Nice old tool! My guess would be that it is a bearing scraping tool used on Babbit bearings. I believe the correct name would be bearing scraper. Older engines and equipment used Babbit bearings. The Babbit was melted, then poured, and then a scraper was used to achieve a perfect fit. Babbit is still used today and scraping in a bearing is an artform. 2dgs

Tool for use with a wood-working lathe? It looks like someone replaced the original handle (a long time ago), as the tang dosen't fit correctly into the current handle.

Cannot say what it is, however having both a lath and horses, I can reasonable say that neither use is applicable.

A lath 'parting tool' is a wedge-shaped tool and the structural crfoss-section is somewhat reinforced to taked the abuse and to provide safety.

A hoof pick device is a simple tool and hasn't changed in a hundred years or so. I have attached a pdf for reference only.

Two Dogs is correct. I have used them for scraping re-poured babbitt bearings. I wouldn't say it's an art. More like a tediously exacting pain in the butt. Basically after pouring and machining the bearing undersized, it is scraped down to size by removing the high spots (where the journal rubs). These scrapers (when sharp) are capable of removing as little as .0001" (1/10,000th of an inch).
