Looking for WW2 Vet's.Next of Kin,Etc.

Hello everybody,First let me THANK ALL that have/are serving our country!!!, THANK'S!...I am looking for the next of kin of Cecil Starkey who served during ww2 on New Guinea in 1942.I have had these photographs for many many years&just figured i'd give TN a shot. These pics were my mothers so this person may be local, but my mother also did U.S.O. work locally&may be of a trasient serviceman,i only remember my mother saying it was a freind&that they were given to her,the writting on back is my mothers hand. i would LOVE to see these go back to either Cecil himself if still around or ANY next of kin.I cannot make out the unit patch but looks to have a star w/the red/blue dot in middle(8th.air force?)w/a square above that within a circular back.(Notice the"Nose-Art",That could help I.D.Unit?)well thank's for listening&looking!

Re: Looking for WW2 Vet's.Next of Kin,Etc.

I can't make out the patch, but I know it is not 8th Air Force. He would have most likely been in the 5th Air Force. I looked on the World War II enlistment records on ancestry.com and only found one Cecil Starkey, but he did not enlist until 1945. That's not to say the photo is wrong; the ancestry records are probably not complete. Ages ago when I was doing some research I came across this website: http://www.armyairforces.com/ - the message board there might be able to help you.

Q. What's the plane?
A.  It's a C-47

Q.  What kind of runway or parking area is that?
A.  It's a pierced steel pad - a makeshift runway.

Q.  What is "Keep it under your hat"?
A.  A common WW II saying for Operations and Communications security... it was also a popular WW II poster... "Careless talk costs lives".   No doubt a cool nose art as well!

Q.  Was he necessarily assignd to the C-47 aircraft unit?
A.  Not neccessarily.  Often, as with most GIs... they post with their own stuff, and the other cool stuff they can fit in the picture.

Might be a helpful site or contact... http://www.centercomp.com/cgi-bin/dc3/story?1004

Re: Looking for WW2 Vet's.Next of Kin,Etc.

A very noble and worty undertaking. My father is a deceased WWII vet and I had hardly any pics of him during that period. One day I received an envelope in the mail with several pics of my dad and a couple of my uncles and my grandmother, and one of my baby pictures! They were taken back in the 40s sometime as the men were in uniform. I was extremely glad to get them and although I do not know the anonymous person who sent them, it was a godsend to me. Monty
