looks like a gun

Found this today. It looks like it may be half of something, the square end is not broken off it has a smooth edge. It is about 7 inches long and about an inch wide. Looks like half of a toy pistol to me but I don't think that is waht it is. Please help! Thanks!

It's possible and it might have been threaded.

It looks similar to one but there is no slot for the ruler to go through and one side of this is hollow and the other side is rounded like it is missing a side. There are no holes where the other side could be connected.

I could be wrong, but I believe the gauge assembly clamped to the flats on your piece, allowing the gauge assembly to be removed and replaced with different ruler widths/cutter styles. I am pretty sure that I have seen this handle type before on a draw gauge...but can't quite remember for sure. You are of course correct that it is not the type of draw gauge illustrated in the picture. Can anyone here add evidence to support or refute the draw gauge theory?

I contacted an expert in leather tools and here was his reply:
Joe,
My gut feeling is that it is not a draw gauge. The early draw gauges did not have a "trigger". A few variations are out there, but I have never seen one with a straight trigger. It seems like the straight part of the frame is also longer than any of the draw gauges I have or have seen. A draw gauge also would have a single slot toward the front of the frame for the horizontal bar to slide through. I wish I could tell what it was, but pretty it was not part of a draw gauge.

I would say its a handle to some type of horse drawn farm equipment..
Sometimes that would be in the center of two pieces of hickory or ash..
That would be my guess

I have found something similar, wasn't till the man himself told me. I cant tell u its the exact same, I can tell old farmers would carry this tool, on there tractor, along with a case of oil. was to hole the oil can. So while in the field they could keep going. I don't know for sure, just know what i was told. allot of them had a wood handle. they would drop them allot.

and the lil stick looking thing, would move back and fourth, to give the farmer an easy way to poke his own hole , depending on the angle, where it was needed. oil was are lube!

Growing up an a farm we had a horse drawn hay rake . Someone would sit on the seat as it was being pulled and when the tongs of the rake would get full they would pull the handle and the hay bundle would dump out from under it. It look likes the handle to that old hay rake to me.
