It's 22 inches long . I put a powerful magnet all oll over it - nothing magnetic . It appears to be all alluminum . The black parts are heavy foam rubber . The nose is wrapped in thick lead . There is a black wire that comes out towards the tail . I can't find any info on Johnson Laboratories , Southold , Long Island . I did a reverse phone # search .... nothing . I'm guessing it was somthing dragged behind a boat ? Thanks for any info !

Some type of side sonar mapper. Something of that sort. For charting depth or bottom detail.

I believe you're right.

Here is a company of the same name (but different location) with industrial directory listings under "Ultrasonic Equipment" and "Navigational Instruments."

Johnson Laboratories, Inc.

Hi, I live on Long Island. Southold is about 40 miles east of me. Southold is not just a town but also a township.
The 516 area code is now 631. It was changed more than 10 years ago. Southold is also the home of the docking station to the notorious Plum Island Animal Research facility.
I wonder if the lab and Plum Island have a connection.

Dont know, but I once (about a yr ago) found a parachute with a radio looking thing and phone # attached, turned out to be a wirless type phone transmiiter (that was droped from a ballon when the batteries run down then another takes over)that they keep depolyed over america for radio cummunication, mostly military but was a private contractor. Gave me a 25.00 credit card when they picked it up a few months later.

Thanks for the great info ! I bought it at a flea market last weekend in Nobleboro , Maine - which is about 10 miles from Walpole .....as a matter of fact I dig most of my clams (my job) in a cove in Walpole , so I go by the Sproul road every day . Codycat's obit pretty much tied everything together ! When I posted it , I never realised it would have such a '' local '' connection . Thanks again !
