I have spent hours Googling for something that looks like my stone, here is my best match.
It seems to be a Pukamoggran tomahawk used the the Comanche and Shoshone ; 3 foot handle with a 2 to 3 pound stone head.

You're over thinking it. It's a grooved maul, used throughout North America. No point trying to link it to modern tribes as it's a common tool form. And a super example! Don't expect perfect matches in shape. It's the function of the tool that matches.

Def a grooved maul!!! CONGRATS.. HH

Without a doubt a 4\4 grooved maul........very nice find.......welcome to the forum......GTP

Thank you all for your input. I now agree, it is a grooved maul.

No doubt, full groove maul...Nice find....

around here the round grooved hammers were used by the women in constructing earth lodges and also used for breaking bufalo and elk bones to get at the marrow

what I said right away

and a nice piece

My vote goes toward grooved maul. The damage on the end of that tells me that it was used on harder things than human heads. It could double as a war club in times of battle, but I like to think I'm the only person with a head hard enough to pit stone, as this one is. Thanks for allowing us to see this fine native artifact. No matter which title you decide for it, it is ultimately a fine display of Native American culture!!
